The Gemini Observatory is an astronomical observatory consisting of two large telescopes located in both Hawaii and Chile. They have been using our chillers for many years in order to run their telescopes.
Gemini came to us with the unique problem of needing a chiller to operate at high elevations for its latest project at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) in northern Chile. The observatory is located on top of two mountains in the Chilean Andes; Cerro Tololo, at an elevation of 7,200 feet high, and Cerro Pachon, at 8,900 feet high.
GCI Engineers got together and custom designed a chiller that would operate in this high altitude region and provide the specified capacity for the telescopes. Once completed, the customer came in for a rigorous 3-day testing process. Gemini was satisfied that the unit met all requested specifications and signed off for it to be shipped to its final destination in Chile.
