Scientific Systems & CarbonQuest: HVAC Solution for Reducing Carbon Emissions

Generating electricity and heat by burning fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, or gas, causes a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, like carbon dioxide (CO2). Emitting these greenhouse gases into Earth’s atmosphere causes a “blanket” over the planet and traps the sun’s heat, leading to faster warming. As a result, Earth and its inhabitants suffer consequences of climate change, such as rising ocean levels, more severe storms, loss of species, and more.

To respond to the ever-increasing threat of climate change, governments worldwide have started responding with solutions to reduce carbon emissions and decrease the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The United States aims to cut emissions by about 50% by 2030, and companies nationwide have begun enacting processes for decarbonization to meet those goals.

One company that is revolutionizing how we think about and utilize CO2 is CarbonQuest. Scientific Systems is announcing a partnership with CarbonQuest to pursue an HVAC solution to reduce carbon emissions.

Who is CarbonQuest?

CarbonQuest mitigates greenhouse gas emissions by capturing CO2 produced by residential and commercial buildings. Their innovative and dedicated team captures CO2 from gas furnaces, boilers, etc., and liquefies it. The goal is to eliminate up to 85% of a building’s net CO2 emissions while promoting and supporting mainstream adoption of critical carbon capture technology nationwide for a more sustainable future.

Scientific Systems’ Collaboration with CarbonQuest

CarbonQuest has requested a compact, highly customized, turnkey low-temperature process chiller from Scientific Systems as a solution to reduce carbon emissions. The custom chiller takes captured CO2 and cools it by -30 degrees Fahrenheit, thus liquifying it.

From there, the liquid CO2 can be stored in pressure vessels, which can be used for various applications, such as cryogenic cooling agents, fire extinguishers, and more. Liquid CO2 can also be used as a fluid or refrigerant in many of Scientific System’s chiller processes, as it is regenerative and recuperative.
